Sabah's climate is much like the rest of Malaysia's. Temperatures are generally high year round, ranging from 25oC to the low 30s (oC). The weather is generally humid year-round, regardless of the rains. The only exception is at higher altitudes, particularly on Mount Kinabalu, where hikers welcome the cooler temperatures which dip even further after sunset. Above 11,000 feet, it's not uncommon for temperatures to periodically dip below freezing, a surprising contrast with the lowland climate.
It takes about 15 minutes to hike to this waterfall from Poring Hot Springs. It's an easy walk and the short trail has lots of interesting plants and wildlife to keep kids engaged. An idyllic pool at the base of the falls is a wonderful place for a cooling swim.
Chinese New Year: celebrated by Malaysia’s Chinese quarter, the New Year is welcomed with traditional lion dances and lots of eating. A family-centred celebration, elders give money to children and unmarried adults in red packages called angpows.
The number-one attraction in Sabah, Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia and has earned status as UNESCO World Heritage site (Malaysia's first). On the clearest days, you can see the Philippines from the peak, and while the ascending trail isn't a cakewalk by any means, it's perfectly feasible for novice climbers to make it all the way to the top. Rest houses along the trail make it possible to break the climb up into short daily segments, so even short-winded climbers can make it to the top if they budget their time well.
Kota Kinabalu International Airport is the primary gateway into the province of Sabah. Regular flights depart for Singapore, Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur, though a roster of less frequent flights makes it possible to book travel farther abroad to places like Brunei, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines and Macau.
Bahasa Melayu is the official language of Malaysia. The diversity of local ethnic tribes in Sabah means that you'll constantly come across pockets of people that speak local dialects or a different language from the Malaysian mainstream. Within the tourism sector, English is spoken.
