The delightful backwater town of Melaka is home to an eclectic mix of cultures and historic architecture that continually entice tourists into the region. Over the centuries booming trade, naval conquests and European colonialism have aided the unique fusion of culture and cuisine that characterise Melaka today.
There’s plenty for adults with children to enjoy in Melaka. Theme parks and the Melaka Zoo headline the city’s attractions, while excursions into Ayer Keroh recreational area provide excellent opportunities for picnics, hiking and wildlife viewing. Local travel agents can arrange trips.
The list of festivals and religious observances in Melaka is an excellent indicator of Melaka’s diversity. Every month there is at least one ethnic pocket celebrating a festival. Parades and fanfare accompany national holidays.
Melaka is endowed with a rich array of sightseeing attractions. Most of the picturesque architecture is Dutch colonial, as most of what the Portuguese built was later dismantled by the British. As Melaka is a medium-sized (though compact) city, a walking or cycling tour is the best means of taking it all in.

Melaka Airport is a small facility located about five miles outside of town. Its short runway can only accommodate smaller aircraft, so there are no mainstream domestic flights to and from Melaka. Even so, regular charter flights head for neighbouring cities like Sumatra, Pekan Baru, and to destinations in Ipoh and Singapore.
