The delightful backwater town of Melaka is home to an eclectic mix of cultures and historic architecture that continually entice tourists into the region. Over the centuries booming trade, naval conquests and European colonialism have aided the unique fusion of culture and cuisine that characterise Melaka today.
Mini Malaysia explores cultural and architectural trends across Malaysia's 13 states. Houses in this park are built to scale and include traditional furnishings that are representative of the region they originated in. Phone: +60 6 231 6087.
Chinese New Year: families and friends celebrate the New Year by exchanging angpows, red gift packets that usually contain some cash. New Year’s parties are normally big family affairs and usually involve traditional lion dancing (to fend off evil spirits) and lots of eating.
Fly a kite. Head to Klebang Beach and buy an inexpensive kite or foam airplane. If you're drawn to the romantic notion of kite-flying rather than to the activity itself, there's a three-storey kite museum in Melaka's city centre.
Among locals, buses are the most popular means of getting from one city to another. Several different bus companies offer service across peninsular Malaysia and competition keeps prices consistently low. All of Melaka's buses-whether long-haul or short-haul-depart from Melaka Sentral Station, which is located a couple of miles outside the city centre. There's also a fleet of express buses which head to primary tourist destinations. When booking one of these buses, you'll usually be given an option between an air-conditioned or fan bus.
It is unlawful to import the following items into Malaysia: weapons (real or imitation); obscene or prejudiced literature (i.e. pornography or anything that slanders race or religion); illegal drugs; or counterfeit money. If you suspect that something you are carrying may violates one of these categories, it's best to consult the nearest Malaysian embassy or consulate before you depart.
