Kelantan (Land of Lightning) is located in the north-eastern corner of Peninsular Malaysia and is one of the most intriguing destinations in Malaysia. Kelantan is a contemporary city offering first class hotel accommodation and a variety of tourist services. However, Kelantan is also filled with rural fishing villages and carefully preserved customs and cultures dating back centuries. It is hard to resist the quaint charm and warmth that this city has to offer.
The most north-eastern of Malaysian states, Kelantan shares a border with Thailand and is characterised by rice fields, small fishing villages and palm-fringed beaches. The region’s charm can be attributed to its remote location and unspoilt culture, its rustic beauty and the opportunities it afford tourists, such as bird watching, river rafting, cruises and jungle trekking.
Children who love playing at the beach and exploring nature have the makings for a great holiday in Kelantan. There are jungle treks here where you can spot native animals or hike to waterfalls and beaches where water activities are abundant.

Chinese New Year: is widely celebrated in Kelantan and throughout Malaysia, thanks to a significant Chinese population. This is a joyous time when friends and relatives bestow gifts of cash in red envelopes (angpows) as tokens of prosperity. Lion dances, family reunions and feasts that usher in the lunar New Year are also common features of the celebration.
Although the state capital Kota Bharu is relatively small, there’s plenty of variety in things to see including historical monuments, museums, important mosques and Buddhist sites. Of particular interest is the War Museum, which documents the Japanese occupation during WWII. The Royal Museum, known as the ‘Brick Palace’ is where you’ll see exhibits of royal life throughout the history of Kelantan’s sultanates.

Kota Bharu has a small airport that’s quite new and efficiently operated. Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) is currently serviced by flights originating in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang. Carriers providing service include AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Pelangi Air.
