Kota Bharu has a small airport that’s quite new and efficiently operated. Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) is currently serviced by flights originating in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang. Carriers providing service include AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Pelangi Air.

There are five direct flights scheduled daily on Malaysia Airlines from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Kota Bharu. AirAsia operates from KLIA’s low-cost carrier terminal to Kota Bharu four times each day. Pelangi Air also offers daily scheduled flights from Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, daily flights are operated from Johor Bahru and Penang.

The Kota Bharu airport is a 15 minute taxi ride from the city centre. Bus service is also available from the airport to the local bus station which is located in the centre of the city.

Bus and taxi services make it straightforward to travel to and from nearby towns. The state’s main bus terminal is in the centre of Kota Bahru. If you’re driving, there are good roads linking the main towns throughout the state of Kelantan.

Public buses are operated by Syarikat Kenderaan Melayu Kelantan (SKMK), and a network of local buses connect the capital with all towns in the state. Express trains stop at all major stations in Kelantan, such as Dabong, Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Tumpat and Wakaf Baru (in Kota Bharu). Local trains stop at almost every station as far as the East Coast Line. Local rail service is the main means of transport for the population living in the interior regions of Kelantan.
