Lithuania Overview


This quirky little country is truly not to be missed. Lithuania is a small and astonishingly vibrant country. With an extremely eccentric artist community and beautiful baroque architecture, there are many unique sites that are certain captivate any visitor. Accommodation in Lithuania are very appealing as many of the hotels feature traditional architecture with charming courtyards.

Lithuania has been busy restoring the wonderful old buildings that represent its earlier history. Its capital Vilnius is situated in a picturesque valley and boasts a Baroque Old Town that is the largest in Eastern Europe and an impressive World Heritage Site. Here hundreds of ornate old buildings have been artfully renovated into beautiful hotels, shops and cafes.

Situated on the eastern Baltic coast, Lithuania is more bucolic than the other Baltic nations, which gives it a slower pace and a bit more charm. While the nation as a whole is Roman Catholic, you can still detect traces of pre-Christian religions influencing life in the countryside, where elaborate wooden sculptures of witches and gnomes are almost as common as crosses.

A land of over 2,800 lakes and an intricate network of rivers, Lithuania's landscape has been smoothed by glaciers over time. It features fertile plains and rolling hills, a quarter of which is covered by forests. There are five national parks and many other conservation areas. Hiking trails can be found all over the country. One of the highlights is the World Heritage Site of Curonian Spit National Park, where visitors can explore sand dunes and pine forests along with rare plants and animals.
