We had booked a standard room at the Mayfair, which cam well recommended, but after spending just 30 minutes in the room decided that we had a choice - change hotel or see if the Hotel's suites were any better! Standard room was overly small and just didn't feel clean. Mini bar had nothing but soft drinks.
Bar was nice, pool was small and cosy (though not terribly clean). The concierge and reception staff were very pleasant and helpful throughout the stay and the best thing about the hotel. Our one experience of the 'included' breakfast put us off eating in the hotel for the rest of the week. The standard rooms were very small and poky, not very clean and generally did not feel like a 4 star property.
We upgraded to the Executive Suite on the top floor - at double the price of the room we had booked - and that was in a different class. Spacious, well stocked mini bar, well sized bathroom and very clean. If there had been no suites available I would have had a horrible stay in Mayflower. However, if I had planned on spending $200+ per night before we arrived I would have looked at other hotels/areas to start with. Hamra is not a great area to stay in if it is your first visit as a tourist to Beirut. The area is rather run down and there is not a great deal of shopping/life. (In contract to some other areas which are beautiful such as Downtown, Byblos etc.) The bar at the Mayflower is pleasant and has internet access but after experiencing the 'included' breakfast on our first morning we opted not to try room service or any of the hotel's other food. We came down for breakfast at 9am and there was basically nothing left. (Breakfast was supposed to be till 10am and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant.) The chef was adding water to what was left of the scrambled eggs trying to make them last the next hour without drying up altogether! Really it was not a good experience at all!! The MINI pool on the hotel roof is cosy and pleasant - though not particularly clan looking (I witnessed the maintenance routine which consisted of pouring five litres of salt into the pool without taking any readings or measurements!), There is also a very comfy seating area next to the rooftop bar (which was NEVER open as advertised) and we spent most of our afternoons up their reading in the sun. All in all The Mayflower is not really a hotel I would recommend to anyone - though the Executive Suite is quite comfortable for $250 a night. Certainly a world of difference from the small dirty standard rooms we spent our first night in. (An empty turkish coffee cup was sitting on a shelf outside the elevator when we checked in and was still there 36 hours later when we moved to the Executive floor to change room!) First time to Beirut? - Look for something on the seafront. Hamra is not the best Beirut has to offer. If you are on a really tight budget - be prepared!!! You get what you pay for!! Very small pool - three strokes from end to end - roof top pool. Not particularly clean (questionable maintenance routine with a 5 litre jug of salt!) but a very pleasant area for sunbathing. Hamra is a maze of narrow streets with not much happening. Do nto believe that this is in the heart of commercial Beirut! Located in the middle of a side street the street noise was minimal.
