Beirut has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. It gets boiling hot here in the summer months of July and August, with the mercury regularly hitting 40oC and averaging somewhere in the region of 30oC to 35oC. Summertime is naturally the best time to enjoy city beaches and the time when rainfall is also at a minimum.
Situated in the downtown district of Beirut, the Solidere Clock Tower is one of the city's most endearing landmarks. It was built by the French in the early 1900s and although it suffered a fair amount of war damage, it has been restored to its former glory. The tower is beautifully lit at night.
This is the area where the famous Pigeon Rocks on Beirut's western tip are best seen from. It is a nice area to go walking, jogging and generally people-watching and there are many restaurants with Lebanese and international food. There is also lots of history in Raouche, where archaeological digs have revealed some of the oldest human communities in Beirut.
Formerly Beirut International Airport, Rafic Hariri International Airport is a major air hub in the region and the main entry point for Lebanon. Direct flights come in from all over the world, including from Europe, Africa, Asia, and throughout the Middle East with the likes of Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa and Emirates.
Beirut is still on shaky ground after the Syrian withdrawal in 2005 and the Israeli invasion of 2006 although tourists are returning. Although Beirut itself is safe, the Hezbollah-supported south should be avoided altogether. Avoid talking about politics and religion full stop, but keep abreast of the political situation through the news in case of flare ups. Beware pickpockets when out and about.
