Top Things to See

Beirut has just enough to offer some good sightseeing, including Lebanon’s foremost museum, ancient Roman ruins and the restored Cathedral of St George’s. There are of course several beaches to check out, of which the private ones are the best, while walkers might like to stroll the Corniche in Raouché to see the Pigeon Rocks.
Beach Club
Of the many private beaches in Beirut, the Beach Club in Khaldeh is the closest one to the city centre and has excellent facilities. The beach itself is only a few hundred feet long yet is beautifully maintained, has four swimming pools and a children’s playground nearby. Waterskiing, jet-skiing and paddle boating can all be enjoyed at the beach and there is also a popular snack bar. Phone: + 961 5 802208
Beirut National Museum
The Beirut National Museum is Lebanon’s greatest source of history. Its vast collections take visitors from pre-history through to the Bronze Age and Iron Age, and then through to the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. The highlight of the museum is the 10th century BC Sarcophagus of Ahiram, while the museum shop has some fascinating souvenirs and books. Phone: +961 1 426703; website: www.beirutnationalmuseum.com
Cathedral of St George
Beirut’s main church (Maronite) was built in 1767 and has been largely restored after severe damage sustained in the Civil War. Although complete restoration of all of the church’s artwork was not possible, the original design was withheld and many fine frescoes remain, along with the bullet holes from the war.
Pigeon Rocks
The main natural feature in Beirut is the series of arches known as the Pigeon Rocks. You can see the Pigeon Rocks directly from part of the Corniche although adventurous types might like to take a closer look. This can be done by taking one of the tracks to the lower cliffs where many inlets and caves reside. Boats can be chartered in the summer for a trip under the arches.
Ramlet al-Bayda Beach
Located on Avenue de Paris off the Corniche, Beirut’s only public beach is a far cry from the private beach clubs, but offers some decent swimming nonetheless. However, the beach does tend to be somewhat male dominated and littered in places.
Raouché
This is the area where the famous Pigeon Rocks on Beirut’s western tip are best seen from. It is a nice area to go walking, jogging and generally people-watching and there are many restaurants with Lebanese and international food. There is also lots of history in Raouché, where archaeological digs have revealed some of the oldest human communities in Beirut.
Roman Ruins
The Roman ruins are a popular Beirut attraction and can be found behind Bank street. The Roman baths are the highlight and would have served the entire city of generals and gentry. The baths have been thoroughly excavated for viewing. The Roman exedra building was uncovered near St George’s Cathedral and now lies along Charles Helou Boulevard, near the marina.
