Riga, arguably the most interesting Baltic capital, has emerged from a turbulent modern history with much of its medieval heritage intact. Today the Latvian capital is home to a UNESCO-protected Old Town featuring outstanding churches while its proximity to the Baltic coast makes it a great beach getaway in the warmer months.
Riga is known for its vast swathes of parkland to the east of the city, which deserves a day of exploration for its well-kept 19th-century gardens. In the city, however, Forest Park is a favourite among picnickers and architecture lovers alike for its grassy patches and pre-war elite abodes respectively. For the active, Riga is just a short hop from the Baltic coast, where diving, swimming and sunbathing can be pursued in the warmer months.
To get a grip on Latvia's turbulent modern history, don't miss a visit to this informative museum. Welcoming visitors with a statue depicting the Riga Red (Soviet) Riflemen and tracing the country's struggle for independence from 1940 to 1991, the museum has exhibits spanning WWII occupation to independence.

It is possible to access Riga by ferry from Stockholm, with daily services operated by Tallink. Rail connections with the city are limited, but you can reach Riga from Russian destinations like Moscow and St Petersburg by train. Services arrive and depart from Riga Station daily. Buses also operate between neighbouring cities like Tallinn and Vilnius.
There are few health issues to consider when travelling to Riga. Standards of hygiene in restaurants are good and medical facilities are on hand to cater to most emergencies. Should you get ill during your stay, there are pharmacies across the city to deal with minor ailments while three major hospitals are on hand to deal with more serious complaints.
