Vientiane has a typically tropical climate, with two distinct seasons based around the annual monsoon. The rainy season begins around June and lasts until late October. Heavy afternoon thunderstorms are normal during this summer period, followed by high levels of humidity which make the hot weather feel even more uncomfortable. However, the rainy season also brings relief to the sometimes dust-choked streets of the capital, cleaning things and helping the dense vegetation burst back into life.
French influence can be seen in many facets of the cuisine in Vientiane, from the ubiquitous fresh baguettes available each morning to the Lao-style pate, tasty Beer Lao and the surprisingly good selection of wine. There are some excellent French restaurants around the Nam Phu Fountain if you need a break from the local Lao food, as well as a handful of cafes that cater to Western tastes, all priced well below what you'd expect to spend.
Vietnamese Tet and Chinese New Year: dragon parades, fireworks and all-night partying fill Chinatown during the Chinese and Vietnamese new year celebrations in the capital.
This beautiful, majestic stupa is the national symbol of Laos and probably the most important single site in the country. Built in 1566, the original stupa was said to contain one of the Buddha's hairs. Despite being destroyed several times, the latest version rises 45 metres and resembles a golden staircase.
If you aren't arriving by air, the other main way of getting into Laos is by bus. The main border crossing into the country is via the Friendship Bridge, which connects Nong Khai, Thailand to Vientiane. Crossing the border is straightforward and relatively quick. All buses arrive at Vientiane's central bus station next to the Morning Market.
Vientiane is safe city for visitors. Perhaps due to the pervasive nature of Buddhism within the society, most residents don't think about stealing from foreigners and violent crime is practically unheard of. However, Vientiane is a poor city and some Laotians may try to overcharge foreigners who are unfamiliar with local prices.
