A backpackers’ paradise, laidback Vang Vieng in central Laos provides foreign visitors with cheap ways to get back to nature. A key activity here is inner-tubing down the sleepy river that goes by the town, with a few cans of Beer Lao to enjoy on the smooth ride. Ultra-affordable guesthouses, restaurants and beer bars line the town’s main street. In a market north of town, Lao textiles, knickknacks and exotic foods are available. The forested area and limestone outcroppings around Vang Vieng are great for the gaping. Tham Phu Kham cave is worth a look too.
