Ethnically, the Lao people originated from southern China, settling in present day Laos from the 13th century onwards. The Lao Kingdom of Lan Xang (meaning 'Kingdom of a Million Elephants') became a powerful player in Southeast Asia and its territory covered much of present day Northeastern Thailand.
Luang Prabang's unspoilt surroundings are ideal for outdoor activities, with everything from waterfalls, hill tribe villages and rivers waiting to be discovered. If you have hired a bicycle to get around town, consider doing the 30km-ride to Kuang Si Waterfall and the Bear Rescue Centre. Rafting is also popular and both the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers offer beautiful scenery. If you prefer to stay on dry land, the trek from Muang Khai to Ban Na Haew offers opportunities to visit hill tribe villages.
Magha Puja: this important Buddhist festival sees monks and worshippers circle the city’s temples, chant and make offerings. The day marks a sermon once given by the Buddha, which outlined monastic regulations. Celebrations are more fervent in the capital Vientiane, but can nevertheless be enjoyed in Luang Prabang.
Housed in the 100 metre deep Sakkalin Savannakuha Cave, Wat Tham Xieng Maen is one of Luang Prabang's more unusual temples. Most people visit this temple and neighbouring Wat Long Khun at the same time. Attractions at the temple include two decaying spirit houses and some relief work that demonstrates excellent workmanship.
The recently modernised Luang Prabang International Airport is a convenient gateway for those coming from Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam. Flights connect Luang Prabang with Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand; Siem Reap in Cambodia; and Hanoi in Vietnam. In addition, three domestic routes are available to: Phongsaly, Vientiane and Xieng Khuang.
Many Lao dishes are accompanied by the staple 'sticky rice', a glutinous form of rice that can be easily rolled into small balls. Diners typically eat sticky rice with their hands, breaking off small pieces to be eaten along with mouthfuls of the main dish. Diners should place the lid on the sticky rice basket to indicate they have finished eating.

This month's lucky winner is Mr. Laith Addabbas who lives in Jordan.
