Based on the Persian Gulf and bordered by Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Kuwait has benefited intensely from its subterranean oilfields. Oil and petroleum-related products now account for 95 per cent of the nation's exports, placing Kuwait among the top-four wealthiest nations (per capita) in the world. Governed by a parliamentary, constitutional monarchy, the country is home to just over three million citizens.
The country's outdoor activities are concentrated in the Kuwait City metropolitan area. Many larger communities have a sea club complete with various sport facilities and swimming pools. Several beaches are found near the city centre and offer basic water sport facilities including scuba diving. Children will enjoy the zoological gardens and the Scientific Centre, the latter of which blends informative museum-style exhibits with entertainment facilities.
Most of Kuwait's important tourist sites are relatively modern, many of which relate to the occupation by Iraq in 1990. The Kuwait Towers are the unofficial emblem of the country and offer one of the best vantage points over Kuwait City. The Red Fort is considerably older and carries visitors back to a previous invasion of Kuwait that took place in the 1920s. Islands off the coast can be reached via ferry or (in some cases) via bridges.

Those arriving in Kuwait by air will land at Kuwait International Airport, the country's only airport. The country's national carrier, Kuwait Airways, is based here and operates flights to Western Europe and across the Atlantic to New York City. However, many prefer to fly with United Airlines, Thai Airways or the regional discount carrier, Jazeera Airways.
