Airports

Nairobi is the main entry point for the majority of travellers who visit Kenya. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, located 15kms from the city centre, is the busiest air hub in all of Eastern and Central Africa and handles most of the flights into Nairobi. The capital’s second airport, Wilson Airport, is mainly used for domestic and chartered flights. Kenya’s national carrier is Kenyan Airways, although a handful of other big international carriers also run fairly regular flights to Jomo Kenyatta. After undergoing some well-needed recent renovation and expansion, the airport has more facilities than ever. Information desks can be found in the Arrivals hall.

There are only two ways to get from the airport to your destination. Taxis are the best choice, as they will take you right to your hotel for a fixed rate and are run by the government. Public buses and a special Kenyan Airways bus, run frequently to the city centre, departing every 20 minutes.

Public Transport

If you are coming overland, you can reach Nairobi by minivan or bus from plenty of cities in neighbouring Tanzania and Uganda. If you are already in Kenya, the capital is serviced by train and bus from Mombasa and long-distance minibuses from smaller towns. As Nairobi is the centre of Kenya’s transportation network, trains arrive throughout the day from Mombasa and Kisumu to the Nairobi Railway Station. Kenya’s comprehensive bus network also converges on the capital, with several private bus companies running service throughout the country.

Most of the sites in Nairobi are near each other and can be reached by walking. The city’s public transport system consists of regular buses, shared taxis called matatus and private taxis. Public buses and the very popular matatus tend to be crowded and sometimes dangerous, so keep an eye on your wallet. Taxis are readily available, but be sure and bargain your fare down because the in-town drivers will always ask for an unnecessarily high price.
