Airports

Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport handles regular daily flights from a large number of international destinations across the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Jordan’s national carrier Royal Jordanian Airlines operates most of the flights exclusively from Terminal 1, while regional carriers like Qatar Airways and Gulf Air pick up the slack in Terminal 2. A third terminal is under construction and will greatly increase passenger capacity once completed.

The terminal features some impressive VIP lounges as well as all the modern amenities any traveller will need upon arriving in Jordan such as currency-exchange kiosks, free wireless Internet and a number of international chain restaurants. It takes 45 minutes to get from the airport to Amman. Taxis are the most convenient transport and are available 24 hours. Airport Express shuttles drop passengers off at the Abdali city centre terminal every 30 minutes between 6.00 and 22.00 for a reasonable fare, and major car hire firms all have offices in the Arrivals area.

Public Transport

It is possible to travel overland into Jordan from several bordering countries, but travel conditions are tenuous and not recommended. The Hejaz Railway runs twice a week from Damascus and Amman, but the nine-hour journey should only be undertaken for the adventurous experience. Three coach companies operate air-conditioned buses between Amman and major Jordanian sites like Petra and Madaba. Among the several bus stations in Amman, Abdali Station on King Hussein Street is the city’s main terminal.

Amman’s public transport system is not its best feature. Public bus routes are poorly mapped and hard to navigate. Amman’s yellow taxis are certainly the best choice for getting around the city. They have meters and drivers are supposed to use them. If the driver tries to say his meter is broken, simply find another taxi. Taxis can also be hired by the half or full day for sightseeing. Walking is also an option when the weather permits, as Amman’s districts are compact enough to explore on foot.
