Yokohama, like Tokyo, has a seasonal temperate climate and an average year-round temperature of about 16oC. Spring is without doubt the best time to be here, especially in April and May, as you can walk around town without sweating buckets during this time. Summertime (June to August) can be quite hot and humid in Yokohama and this is not the best time to be visiting.
Yokohama shopping options are mainly confined to mega shopping malls where you can also find good eating and side entertainment. The Landmark Plaza Shopping Mall in the Landmark Tower, Minato Mirai, is five floors of shopping mayhem that also includes a theme park. Mycal Honmoku Shopping Mall at Yokohama Bay is touted as Japan's largest mall, with over 300 shops, restaurants and cafes.
Minato Mirai is Yokohama's most popular district, a mini-city lying in the centre of town and the result of an ambitious revitalisation project. It is focused around the Landmark Tower and is as typically hi-tech as you'd expect in a contemporary Japan, featuring huge shopping complexes, mega entertainment areas and the popular Cosmo World amusement park. Transport in and around Minato Mirai is superb and there are lots of hotel options.
Buses and trains come into Yokohama from all over Japan, usually via Tokyo, while motorway access is also good. Driving within the city can be tough, however. If you just plan on staying in central Yokohama, it is easy enough to get about on foot or by bicycle, yet public transport options are good.
