Most visitors to Japan understandably focus on Tokyo and it does have many of Japan’s foremost urban attractions, yet Yokohama is totally revitalised and has some pretty amazing sights of its own. These include one of the world’s largest Chinatowns, the hi-tech Minato Mirai area and associated Landmark Tower, and the beautiful Sankeien Garden.

Chinatown (Cukagai)
One of Yokohama’s more intriguing sights, Chinatown encompasses Japan’s largest Chinese community and contains 500 Chinese-style shops and restaurants. It is located near Yamashita Park, enclosed by four huge gates and is mainly about the eating and ambience from a tourist angle. Traditional Chinese herbalist outlets and curio shops abound.

Kannai
Kannai is the waterfront area of Yokohama; it’s a popular historic district with lots of character and charm. There are loads of interesting attractions here, including the spectacular Sankeien Garden and many brilliant museums. You will also find the Marine Tower and Osanbashi Pier here, as well as the curious Red Brick Warehouse district and several top-flight hotels.

Landmark Tower
Yokohama’s Landmark Tower is Japan’s tallest building and is purported to have the world’s fastest elevator. Naturally, the Landmark has the best views of the city, taking in the complete Yokohama panorama from the aptly named Sky Garden. You can even discern Mount Fuji on a clear day or perhaps go shopping in the immense Landmark Plaza.

It is focused around the Landmark Tower and is as typically hi-tech as you’d expect in a contemporary Japan, featuring huge shopping complexes, mega entertainment areas and the popular Cosmo World amusement park. Transport in and around Minato Mirai is superb and there are lots of hotel options.

Osanbashi Pier
Originally the largest port in Japan where an immense amount of merchandise was shipped in and out, Yokohama’s Osanbashi Pier has lots of appeal. It was built in 1894 but has recently been modernised and can dock as many as four 27,000-tonne ships at the Yokohama International Passenger Terminal. The terminal is one vast open space and has pretty good shopping and eating.
