Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido, was settled by Japanese pioneers in the 1800s, and before this time it was home to the aboriginal Ainu people. The resulting demographic fosters a unique blend of indigenous sensibilities and mainstream Japanese culture. Cast in a volcanic landscape that is blanketed in snow during the winter, Hokkaido hosts a number of resort communities that capitalise on the region's hot springs and snow-swept mountains.
The highest concentration of restaurants on Hokkaido is found in capital city, Sapporo. Ramen noodle shops are especially popular for a fast bite to eat; tourists will find a long string of these shops along Ramen Yokocho, a street in Sapporo that is particularly well-known for its noodle houses. Sapporo also brews one of the favourite beers in Japan, and the beer garden (adjacent to the beer museum) is the best place to sample the local brew.
Situated in central Hokkaido, the city of Furano has two claims to fame. In the summer, visitors come to view the expansive fields of lavender on display here; while those arriving the winter usually plan to take advantage of the exceptional, dry-powder snow that accumulates here. Also of interest is the cheese factory, a byproduct of Hokkaido's unexpected status as a important centre of dairy production.
Those arriving on Hokkaido by air will be routed through Chitose International Airport in the capital city, Sapporo. All Nippon Airways, Skymark Airlines, Japan Airlines and Air Do provide domestic service to important regional cities across the Japanese archipelago. Meanwhile, Air China, EVA Air, China Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Continental Airlines (along with several other carriers) maintain international routes to several important cities across Asia.
Japanese value cleanliness, and there are several rules of conduct related to these mores. Many visitors to Hokkaido take advantage of the region's spas, and it is worth mentioning that these facilities require guests to bathe nude. Baths are segregated according to gender, and guests are expected to thoroughly clean themselves before entering communal facilities. In other arenas, shoes should be removed before entering sacred areas or private residences. Restraint and mutual respect are an important aspect of local culture.

This month's lucky winner is Mr. Laith Addabbas who lives in Jordan.
