Top Things to See

Hokkaido’s greatest single asset is its national park land. There are multiple parks across the island, many of which are centrally located. Shiretoko National Park doubles as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and intrepid hikers flock here for a chance to glimpse one of Japan’s largest brown bear colonies. The entire Hokkaido countryside is characterised by hot springs and sparkling calderas. A quirky feature of the region is the marimo, a rare, ball-shaped collection of algae found in the lakes of Akan National Park.

Akan National Park
There are several serene lakes located in this national park, most notable the volcanic caldera, Lake Mashu. Lake Akan and Lake Kussharo are also popular with visitors. A unique aspect of the Akan lakes is the presence of large moss balls (marimo), a rare phenomenon only found a few places in the world.

Daisetsuzan National Park
Japan’s largest parkland, Daisetsuzan National Park, encompasses a range of volcanic mountains at the island’s interior. There are several resort communities situated along the perimeter of the park, and guests have access to winter sport and spa facilities. Hiking here in the backcountry is a particularly rewarding experience, and visitors have the opportunity to view a range of wildlife including the Hokkaido brown bear.

Furano
Situated in central Hokkaido, the city of Furano has two claims to fame. In the summer, visitors come to view the expansive fields of lavender on display here; while those arriving the winter usually plan to take advantage of the exceptional, dry-powder snow that accumulates here. Also of interest is the cheese factory, a byproduct of Hokkaido's unexpected status as a important centre of dairy production.

Shikotsu-Toya National Park
Another centrally located national park, Shikotsu-Toya is easily accessed from Sapporo. It is best known for its clear caldera lakes and hot springs. Two key attractions are Mt Usu (a highly active volcano) and the Noboribetsu spa and resort, fuelled by the park’s hot springs.

Shinhidaka
A picturesque town in Southern Hokkaido, Shinhidaka was known as Shizunai before a rezoning campaign in 2006. This is a historic centre of thoroughbred breeding dating to the turn of the 20th century when the Niikappu ranch rose to prominence. The city boasts a lovely collection of cherry trees best enjoyed during the annual cherry blossom festival staged every May.

Shiretoko National Park
Hokkaido’s most impressive national park is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is situated on a remote peninsula on the northern face of the island, and there are no roads providing access. Visitors arrive on foot or by sea to enjoy the network of hiking trails, waterfalls and hot springs. The park also hosts the nation’s largest population of bears.
