Fukuoka lies towards the southern end of Japan's Kyushu Island, giving it a fairly moderate climate compared to more northerly parts of the nation. There are four distinct seasons in Fukuoka, and summers can get quite hot and humid. Between June and August, the weather is at its most uncomfortable. Most of the city's rain falls during about six weeks in June and July so bring good rain gear if you plan a summer visit.
This popular gaming centre is ideal for both adults and kids on a rainy day. There are batting cages, bowling lanes, billiard tables, and naturally, karaoke rooms. There is also a huge video game room filled the latest Japanese games. Phone: +81 92 833 8282
This slightly active volcano in the centre of Kyushu Island is the world's largest caldera, spanning 24km from north to south. The landscape is truly beautiful, with lush green hills mixed with a couple of smoking cinder cones. There are several villages right inside the crater, and the hiking around the area is superb.
Taxis are also easy to find in the city and relatively cheap if you need a quick direct transport option. Renting a car is straightforward, and best done at the airport. You'll need an international driving license and a credit card to rent a car in Japan.
The main tourist information office is in Hakata Station, offering free maps and sightseeing brochures. It is open every day from 08.00 to 20.00. The free Welcome Card is worth picking up as it offers discounts on some hotels, restaurants and attractions.
