Top Things to See

Fukuoka is an ancient city, and as such has a number of important historic sites well worth checking out such as Fukuoka’s castle. Temples like Tochoji and Komyozenji are amazing examples of Zen architecture, while the Kushida Shrine serves a different but equally important cultural role. Momochi Seaside Park is a great place to unwind, and don’t miss Fukuoka Tower for the best views of the city.

Fukuoka Castle
This city’s ancient castle may be in ruins, but it is still one of the most popular spots for locals and tourists alike who venture up the hill mainly for the incredible views. In its heyday, the castle contained 47 turrets, but today only the Tamon turret, Otemon gates and a few sections of wall remain. Still, it’s a great place to go for the afternoon or a sunset.

Fukuoka Tower
This tower in the Momochi District rises 234 metres, and is one of the best places in Fukuoka to get a panoramic view over the entire city. Sunsets are particularly impressive from this vantage point. Next to the tower, a beach running 2.5 kilometres provides some of the best swimming and sunbathing in the city.

Komyozenji Temple
Just minutes from the Kushida Shrine is this Zen temple that contains the only Zen rock garden in all of Kyushu. This is a really special temple to visit because it is rarely crowded, and the mossy rock garden at the back of the compound is simply stunning, especially in autumn when the maple trees change colour.

Kushida Shrine
Fukuoka’s oldest shrine has long been the site where local merchants pray for prosperity and health. Founded in 757, a 1,000-year-old gingko tree shades the front court of the shrine that honours the deity Ohata Nushina-mikoto. It was built for the common people during the Heian period and still plays a vital role in the social and cultural life of Fukuoka.

Momochi Seaside Park
It may be manmade, but this two-kilometre stretch of beach and adjoining promenade is a wonderful place to stroll along and mingle with the locals. The park is lined with restaurants and shops, as well as modern developments like Hawks Town and the Fukuoka Dome, where the local baseball team plays.

Tochoji Temple
This reconstruction of one of Fukuoka’s most famous Buddhist temples is best known for housing Japan’s largest wooden seated Buddha, towering 10 metres high. There is also a fascinating room-by-room walking tour featuring the Hells of Buddhism, at the end of which you will (hopefully) discover enlightenment. It’s a popular temple and a great introduction to Japanese Buddhism.
