Airports

Visitors fortunate enough to fly directly into Siena will land at the Ampugnano Airport, situated five miles outside of the city centre. This facility operates mostly regional flights, with regular connections to Vienna and Olbia as well as one route farther afield to Munich. A shuttle bus service transfers passengers from the airport to Piazza Gramsci.

Most inbound passengers land 72 kilometres away in Florence's Amerigo Vespucci International Airport (FLR), which operates service to every major city in Italy as well as to a dozen cities across the continent of Europe. Coaches from the airport in Florence connect directly to Siena, while those wishing to take the train will first need to transfer to the train station in Florence. It is also convenient to connect to Siena through the Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) in Pisa.

Public Transport

It is convenient to arrive in Siena by train from elsewhere in Italy. Frequent daily trains travel to and from Empoli, while it is also possible to book direct connections to Florence. You'll find the train station a short distance south of the city centre. Tourists qualify to purchase the TrenItalia Pass, which allows a set number of travel days by train within a set time limit. Buses are equally efficient in transporting passengers to and from Siena, especially when arriving from Florence.

Getting around Siena is largely accomplished on foot, as the city centre is off-limits to motorists. The town is compact enough to accommodate walking tours, and the lack of traffic makes walking convenient. Compared with elsewhere in Italy, parking is readily available immediately outside of the historic centre, so many visitors choose to hire a vehicle which they use for excursions into the Tuscan countryside. Taxis are available for those who don’t want to drive and can be reserved by phone in advance.

Excellent hotel, if you are driving your car (about 23 Kms from Siena town centre, no public transports...). Wonderful breakfast (though Continental, not ABF). Rooms quite small, but well furnished....
