Assisi is one of Italy’s top tourist sites, drawing millions of visitors every year. Though the town is small, it offers Roman roots, a spectacular castle and winding alleyways from the Middle Ages. Famed for the saints Francis and Clare, the town is steeped in religious symbolism and draws large throngs on all major Christian holidays. Its two-storey basilica offers soaring frescoes painted by Sienese artists Lorenzetti and Martin, and Florentine artists Cimabue and Giotto. Damaged by earthquake in 1997, the church and many of the older buildings in Assisi were damaged, but many have been renovated and have reopened, as restoration continues.
