Tiberias has no airport of its own and the nearest major aviation facility is the Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport, located some 150 kilometres away. The airport is the country’s chief international gateway and is a busy facility with an annual capacity for 12 million passengers. Over 47 different airlines connect the airport with destinations across the globe.

The airport has three terminals, each of which offers essential facilities such as ATMs, bureau de change, shops and restaurants. To get to Tiberias from the airport, visitors should get to Tel Aviv first by public bus or shared taxi, then take one of the regional buses operated by Egged, www.egged.co.il/eng,  for the remainder of the journey. The alternative is to take a train from the airport to Akko, then a bus to Tiberias. Taxis and hire cars are also a possibility.

The journey by road to Tiberias takes 2.5 hours from Jerusalem and 1 hour and, 20 minutes from Haifa. The town is served by four major roads. Egged, the national bus company, operates direct bus services from all major cities to Tiberias, www.egged.co.il/Eng.  

The town’s public bus service is operated by Connex and while it’s reasonably priced, routes and signs are invariably available in Hebrew only so figuring out the basics can be tricky. The shared taxis known as sheruts offer a more convenient way of getting around; they follow vague routes and usually set off when full but can be hailed in the street.

Cycling is popular around the Sea of Galilee, which can be circumnavigated in a day (55 kilometres). Walking is also a popular way to get around, especially along the promenade.
