Yogyakarta's beginnings date to the 9th century, when Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms were the dominant civilisations in the region. During this early period, magnificent religious structures such as Ratu Boko, Borobudur and Prambanan were erected near Yogyakarta.
If you're the energetic type, then consider joining the locals at Boulevard UGM on a Sunday morning for everything from jogging to more specialised pursuits such as tai chi, taekwondo and capoeira. Individuals pursuing similar activities tend to find one another and informal groups quickly appear. If you have a basic knowledge of the activity, then join in as there's no charge and the locals will welcome you.
Yogyakarta Arts Festival: the highlight of the city’s calendar is a vibrant affair which sees a variety of cultural activities including live music, traditional dance and puppet shows. Events are held at various venues around the city.
Built as a tribute to King Pancapana and his wife Dyah Pramudya Wardhani of the Sanjaya and Cailendra dynasties respectively, this splendid Buddhist temple has a number of outstanding features, among which are beautiful wall carvings and Vajralepa-treated walls. The temple is located on the road between Yogyakarta and Prambanan.
The Giwangan bus station, located four kilometres southeast of the city centre, is the terminus for all public bus services in Yogyakarta with connections available to Jakarta (9 hours), Surabaya (8 hours) and Bandung (6 hours). Local services are also available on regular buses and minibuses. Fares are standard irrespective of distance and it's usually feasible to get on or off pretty much anywhere along the designated route. Public buses begin service at 06:00 and finish at 17:00, with some services continuing until 21:00.
Customs allowances differ according to how long you plan on holidaying in the country. For a week-long stay, visitors are permitted up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 100 grams of tobacco and 2 litres of alcohol. For a two-week stay, the cigarette allowance doubles and triples for stays of more than two weeks. Alcohol allowances remain the same irrespective of the length of stay, while gifts up to a value of US$100 and a reasonable amount of perfume are standard for any length of stay.
