Top Things to See

Some of Indonesia’s top historic, religious and cultural highlights are found in Central Java. Topping them all is the sublime Buddhist Boroburdur Temple, the largest sanctuary of its kind. European forts, Muslim mosques and ancient palaces also feature in the region, showing just how powerful the Javanese kingswere during their heyday.

Boroburdur Temple
One of the world’s greatest architectural wonders is this sublime Buddhist temple built from two million stone blocks in perfect symmetry. More than three miles (five kilometres) of relief carvings give visitors plenty to examine in this Buddhist version of the cosmos, but it’s the overall timeless ambiance that really packs a punch. It’s best experienced at dawn or dusk, when the lighting is truly magical. Phone: +62 293 788 266; website: www.boroburdurpark.com.

Kasunanan Palace
This 1745 palace complex is one of the highlights of Central Java, featuring a wide range of historic exhibits to add life to the majestic buildings onsite. From novelties like the palace train to traditional weapons, furniture and artwork, there is a lot to absorb here.

Mangkunegaran Palace
Built by King Mangkunegoro I in 1757, this splendid palace features traditional joglo architecture epitomised by four main pillars called Soko Guru. Inside visitors can peruse the large collection of historic relics such as masks, musical instruments, puppets and weapons.

Prambanan Temple
Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex is a stunning example of architecture and religious devotion. Built around the 10th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site consists of massive stone temples characterised by sharp, jagged pinnacles. Built to honour Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma, this is one historical site not to be missed.

Semarang
For a look at the working side of Central Java, spend some time in its capital, Semarang. Its lack of obvious tourism appeal allows visitors to explore the urban face of Java without tourist touts. There’s plenty of charm, however, in the Dutch colonial architecture, Chinatown and traditional kampongs nestled against each other in the old district. The city’s main square, Simpang Lima, is a good place to start your explorations.

Yogyakarta
As one of Indonesia’s oldest cities, there are dozens of wonderful historic buildings and monuments in this popular tourist destination. The sultan’s palace, Kraton Ngayogyakarta, is the main attraction followed by a wealth of colonial era structures. The city was designed using many spiritual elements, giving it a distinctly harmonious atmosphere. It is also the gateway to wonders such as Boroburdur and Prambanan.
