Ulun Ubud Resort & Spa Reviews
1 - 4 of 4 review(s)
A HotelTravel.com Member from Australia stayed in a Family room ( 4 people ) for 3 days.
This property was built 20 years ago, not in 1909! It must have been inspiringly beautiful when it was in it's prime. An amazing piece of infrastructure, the hotel is built on the side of a very steep valley with a river at the bottom. The rooms are built on the slope like the steepest padi terraces in Bali, with the lowest terrace being the swimming pool. The owner clearly has a policy of zero maintenance. There are a number of rooms that have already been abandoned. I could not stop myself thinking of how little was really required to bring this place back to being sensational, at least in comparison to what it must have cost to build it there in the first place. The worst thing is the woodwork. Every piece of outdoor wood desperately needed oiling or varnishing. Even the chairs at the big dining table on our balcony left flaking varnish all over the backs of my legs each night.
We were a couple and a friend traveling together and I booked the Family Room for three nights . The Family Room is actually a double and a twin room each with it's own bathroom. There is no connecting door, the rooms just open onto the same balcony. There was a table with two chairs in front of the twin room and a big marble topped table with four chairs in front of the double room. Our level was nearer the top than the bottom which was good except when we were going to the pool. Obviously you should not consider this place if you are not okay with the steps, but cliff-hanging is what this place is about. Our average age was mid fifties and we coped fine, with a bit of panting. The pool was just gorgeous. It was the loveliest pool of all the places that we stayed in Bali. It was visually marred by the three deteriorating plastic deck chairs at it's edge, such a shame!
If you can ignore the silent screaming of the outdoor woodwork, the rooms themselves are not that bad. In our room there was is a woven pyramid ceiling above the bed and windows all along two sides, overlooking the void. The overall decor was like a sepia print but, of course, not maintained so the actual print on the wall had been rearranged by silverfish. There were no hand towels or face clothes and the towels are tired and need replacing. There were little open ceramic pots of liquid soap and shampoo. This was the only soap - fortunately we had our own. The rooms had air-con and 'mini-bars' but no ice cubes. There is no television. The wardrobe boasted three coat hangers. The bed had a foam mattress and was comfortable. The pillows had a whiff of mildew but fortunately it did not trigger any allergic reactions.
The staff were pleasant and helpful. The free shuttle service was very good although we only used it a few times as we hired motor bikes for two days. These were arranged by the gentleman who served our breakfast through a local supplier who delivered them to the hotel and collected them from there. The cost was Rs45,000 per bike per day (even though we were initially told this was not enough, it was).
The breakfast was like breakfast in Bali twenty years ago; fruit juice, eggs of choice, jam-butter-toast, coffee or tea. After the first day, it is impossible to think of a reason not to order breakfast by 'phone and have it delivered to your balcony. You would not think of having any other meals here. Apart from taking the shuttle bus into town for dinner, there are some restaurants within walking distance (bring your torch). The Fly Cafe is 5 minutes walk to the right. It had great food and an excellent band on Saturday night. Naughty Nuris (a busy expat place) and a Mexican restaurant are 10 to 15 minutes walk to the left.
But there was some magic here. Like watching birds fly vertically up the slope in front of your room rather than horizontally. And watching the little bats at twilight. Laying awake in bed at night there was some serenity here.

A HotelTravel.com Member from France stayed in a Suite for 2 days.
Having booked two suites, we were extremely disappointed to get family bedrooms of very poor quality: big spiders, insects, dirt and old bathrooms, strong smell of humidity. On our arrival, nobody from the hotel advised us about the change in the booking and if we had not complained the day after about the standard of the rooms versus what we paid. The resort was build 21 years ago, it is beautiful but needs a serious renovation. The swimming pool is under renovation and is nice, however in December (6 days before our arrival), further to heavy rains some buildings close to the swimming pool were brought down the hill into the river. We were not sure that the safety of the resort was fully assured.
Its location, far away by 3 kms from the center of Ubud, makes the resort a peaceful place and the system of free shuttle is quite convenient. The quality of the breakfast is not good, there is no spa/massage on site. In conclusion, it is expensive for the services offered by the resort.Standard of Room
