Airports

Udaipur’s Dabok Airport, also known as Maharana Pratap Airport, is located approximately 25kms from the city centre and offers connections to many of India’s major airports. Regular flights connect the city to Aurangabad, Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Mumbai. The majority of international flights arrive at either Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi or Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Connecting flights from either of these locations can be booked easily.

Visitors are advised to book connecting flights at the same time as booking international flights. Make sure you allow sufficient time between flights in case of any unforeseen delays which may cause you to loose your seat. Make sure to reconfirm your flight 24 hours before takeoff by calling your airline.

Public Transport

India’s public transportation runs surprisingly well amid what seems like complete chaos. Buses and trains normally run on time according to fixed schedules. There are various transport options from train and bus to private car hire and the novel rickshaw.

Udaipur has excellent rail connections to other major Indian cities such as Ahmadabad, Ajmer, Chittorgarh, Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur. By far the best train services are those known as ‘superfast’. In addition to high-speed links to major cities, these ‘superfast’ trains are also often more comfortable than regular services, offering air-conditioning and comfortable reclining seats. Shatabdi and Rajdhani express trains are two of the better ‘superfast’ services. ‘Mail trains’ offer visitors a slower and slightly more crowded means of travelling to Udaipur. They are, however, a good way to immerse yourself in Indian culture while affording you plenty of time to sit back and take in the textured countryside.

Travelling by bus is another option that allows you to experience Indian culture and see the sights, along with various entertaining quirks along the way. Udaipur’s main bus terminal is located on Station road. Lines running to other Rajasthan destinations and farther north and west are available at regular intervals from this station. For more information, contact a local travel agent.

One of the most novel ways to get around while in Udaipur is by rickshaw. Both adults and children will delight at being zoomed from place to place in these three-wheeled vehicles. There are no metres, so be sure to agree on a price before getting in. Travelling by rickshaw is one of the most affordable means of transport. Many visitors hire rickshaws with knowledgeable drivers by the hour to explore the local hotspots.

Cars are available for hire from both the airport and from a number of car hire agencies in the city. Drivers in India often ignore road rules and regulations, while road conditions can often be dangerous. If you are looking to sit back and enjoy your holiday, it is a good idea to consider hiring an experienced driver along with your car.

Taxis are widely available and another low-cost way to get around. Like rickshaws, taxis do not generally have meters. One good way to avoid getting ripped off is to ask the going rate at your hotel information desk before setting off.
