The town of Sawai Madhopur, in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, includes Ranthambore National Park and the centuries-old fortress Ranthambore. Great old hotels, new and comfy ones, and cheaper digs can all be found with HotelTravel.com.

Sawai Madhopur region is thick with remnants of its past history. Walls, wells, mosques and hunting lodges adorn the lush rolling hills of the Vindhyas and the Aravalis all of which have been a witness of the rise and fall of many rulers and battle scenes in the area over the centuries. One of these, once a hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Jaipur, has been converted into a hotel.

Located in the hills of eastern Rajasthan northeast of Jaipur, the city of Sawai Madhopur provides visitors a hub for regional exploration and in particular, trips into the Ranthambhore National Park. In fact the two major attractions here are the Ranthambhore Fort and the National Park. If you’re lucky, you might spot one of quite a few of the majestic tigers roaming through the park’s vast wilderness area.
The activities on offer for children in Sawai Madhopur are not of the typical theme park variety. What families will find is a wealth of educational and fun opportunities, such as exploring wildlife parks, learning about the history of this ancient area through Ranthambhore Fort – and taking part in the hugely popular sport of kite-flying.

International Kite Festival: Even though Sawai Madhopur’s International Kite Festival has only been held for a few years, it has become very popular. The best kite-flyers descend on the city from all around India and from other countries as well. The date for the 3-day festival is set according to the celebration of Makar Sankranti, in mid-January. The skies are filled with colourful kites in all sorts of shapes, and the winner is the flyer whose kite is the last left in the air: abrasives applied to kite strings allow flyers to cut the strings of opponents’ kites.
Sawai Madhopur is a gateway to the well known Ranthambhore National Park and the larger tiger sanctuary. The park’s wildlife is diverse, with species ranging from rare and exotic birds to the main attraction here: the endangered Inidan tiger. In addition to the park, Ranthambhore Fort is the other main drawcard; while there are numerous temples of interest in the city to visit as well.

Sanganer Airport in Jaipur is the nearest facility to Sawai Madhopur, and is just a little over 130 kilometres away. Jaipur is not only the capital of Rajasthan; but is also a regional tourist hub and provides excellent ongoing connections to all places of interest to visitors. Unless your hotel is providing transfer from the airport, you will need to rely on the bus service which runs frequently from Jaipur Airport to Sawai Madhopur.
