Ooty is the colloquial name for Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam, a destination in the state of Tamil Nadu in the south of India. Dubbed the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Ooty covers an area of over 36 square kilometres and is home to the Dodabetta peak, the highest point in South India.
Ooty is fairly bereft of purpose-built attractions for young visitors and is far more of an adult visitor destination than anything else. However, the beautiful landscape is something that people of all ages will enjoy. Parents taking their kids on a family holiday here or a short trip as a part of a tour of the region, will find a small selection of possibilities for entertaining children.
Ooty celebrates all of India’s popular festivals, including those aimed specifically at Hindus and Buddhists; however, it has little in the way of exclusive events that are specific to the town with a scant three entries on the calendar of this nature. The Summer Flower Festival at the Botanical Gardens is perhaps the highlight of the year but as the weather is so hot at this time, few visitors will want to schedule their holidays to coincide with the event. The Tea and Tourism Festival in January is a different matter however, regularly attracting large numbers of tourists.
Ooty is not really a sightseeing destination, it is much more a place for appreciating nature and the great outdoors it therefore should come as no surprise that many of the sights are nature-based. The town’s Botanical Garden is among the most popular attractions of this nature; it is however drawfed in terms of sheer size and variety of wildlife both flora and fauna by the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, which is definitely the place for nature lovers to visit.

The nearest airport to Ooty is in Coimbatore which is situated 100 kilometres from the town. Coimbatore Airport is a domestic airport which maintains connections with Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. There are however more flights from Sharjah, Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore. The main airlines operating out of Coimbatore are Indian Airlines, Kingfisher, Air Deccan, Air Sahara and Jet Airways
