Munnar does not have an airport, and must be reached by road. The nearest airport to the area is located in the city of Kochi. International flights from around Asia and domestic flights throughout India fly directly to Kochi. Other airports are located farther away at: Madurai, 142kms; Thiruvananthapuram, 302kms; Coimbatore, 156kms; and Kozhikode, 287kms.

Munnar is only accessible by road. The winding mountain trail to the city offers picture perfect views to provide you with one of the most awe-inspiring journeys you will take while in India. Both state-run and private bus companies go to Munnar from Kochi, Kottayam, Kunily and Madurai. All buses pull into the station located close to the town’s bazaar to the north. Train routes, as is the case with flights, will only take you as far as neighbouring cities, from which car or bus transfer are the only means of getting to Munnar.

Once you have arrived, getting around the town itself is generally quite easy. There are a range of options and as the city is small and the roads reasonably quiet, it is often possible to walk or travel by bicycle. These options also allow you to sit back and take in the sights as you travel at your own pace. Bicycles are available for hire from DTPC office in town and cost very little. Buses are available around town at regular intervals. Ask at your hotel concierge desk for bus timetables.

Rickshaws are readily available all around town and are a novel way of getting to your destination. Taxis are also a good option for longer distances and getting out into the countryside. The Free Tourist Information Service with their office at the main bazaar in town should be able to provide you with any travel information you may need while in Munnar.
