Located in 'God's own country', as the state of Kerala is otherwise known, Kumarakom is a unique destination that epitomises the natural beauty of the region. Kumarakom comprises a small town sitting on the edge of a collection of small islands that are connected by what’s known as the backwaters of Kerala. These interconnecting waterways feature canals, lakes and rivulets that are rich in natural life and provide picturesque scenery, as well as supporting a large collection of wildlife species.
Although Kumarakom does not offer a plethora of child friendly activities, there are a few attractions on offer that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Parents who are intent on taking the little ones here will really need to improvise and make use of the area’s natural beauty, or be prepared to travel some distance to other destinations in Kerala where attractions are available.
Kumarakom has very little in the way of festivals that it celebrates exclusively, with most of its calendar comprised of religious events that are celebrated nationwide. The Onam harvest festival in August and September, however, is Kerala’s biggest annual affair and sees Kumarakom host some of the traditional snake-boat races that are typical of the event.

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid
Kottayam is located very close to Kumarakom and is home to a large collection of interesting religious buildings. With construction occurring over a millennium ago, this mosque is considered to be one of the oldest in the country and is notable for its magnificent architecture as well as the beautiful carvings in wood which adorn its interior. The mosque is the product of the efforts of followers of the prophet Mohammad from back during their early visits to Kerala.

There is no airport serving the immediate area around Kumarakom, however, the state of Kerala offers three international airports: Cochin, Calicut and Trivandrum. It may be difficult to get a direct international flight to any of these airports, in which case, visitors will need to fly to Bombay or Madras and then take a connecting flight to Kerala. From Trivandrum International Airport, visitors can reach Kumarakom by either road or rail as far as Quilon; then a boat ride via Alleppey and a taxi ride to Kumarakom. From Cochin International Airport, visitors can take the boat ride to Alleppey from where they can take a taxi to Kumarakom.
