There is no airport serving the immediate area around Kumarakom, however, the state of Kerala offers three international airports: Cochin, Calicut and Trivandrum. It may be difficult to get a direct international flight to any of these airports, in which case, visitors will need to fly to Bombay or Madras and then take a connecting flight to Kerala. From Trivandrum International Airport, visitors can reach Kumarakom by either road or rail as far as Quilon; then a boat ride via Alleppey and a taxi ride to Kumarakom. From Cochin International Airport, visitors can take the boat ride to Alleppey from where they can take a taxi to Kumarakom.

To reach the state of Kerala, it’s possible to take the train from Bombay, Madras or Bangalore. If you disembark at Cochin, you’ll need to take the boat to Alleppey and a taxi to Kumarakom, however if you disembark at Kottayam, you can travel the remaining 16kms by road only. Alternatively it’s possible to change at Cochin station and take a south-bound train via Alleppey, disembarking at Chertala before travelling by road for the remaining 14kms to Kumarakom. Taxis from Alleppey are reasonably priced and normally metered.

For travelling around Kumarakom itself, a taxi or motorised rickshaw is the best way to go. Tourist taxis and yellow-top taxis do most of the business and are an easy way to move around the city and to destinations just outside of town. Visitors can also hire private taxis in a variety of forms if they want a driver for the entire day.
