Khajuraho’s major claim to fame is its millennium-old erotic statues carved into medieval Hindu and Jain temples. Their design is thought to appease malevolent deities. Get a room of your choice from a wide variety of hotels, booked by HotelTravel.com.

Khajuraho combines history, architecture, culture and environment with delectable charm and has some excellent accommodation choices to select for your stay here. Let Khajuraho take you away from the noise and pollution of many of the other typical Indian cities, with its fresh air and scenic countryside. Its quaint charm and marvelous beauty of the temples makes it Madhya Pradesh’s most famous tourist town and you really shouldn’t miss it.
Khajuraho, in the Bundelkhand region of the state of Madhya Pradesh, is essentially just a small Indian town and one which might not have achieved any particular fame had it not been for the Chandela Rajput dynasty leaving their indelible mark upon it between the 10th and 16th centuries. The town takes its name from the Hindi word ‘khajur’ meaning ‘date palm’ because of the abundance of trees of that variety in the area.
Khajuraho is essentially a sightseeing destination and definitely not the place to take the little ones. Visitors with kids will genuinely struggle to find anything outside of their hotels to keep young minds occupied and are perhaps best off looking elsewhere in India if a family holiday is what’s required.
Khajuraho has but a single festival that is exclusive to the town; while others that are celebrated are those that are recognised by the entire country and belong to the faiths of Hinduism or Buddhism. The Khajuraho Dance Festival in February is the only event without a specific religious slant in the town’s calendar.
The temples built by the Chandela dynasty is undeniably the main sightseeing attractions. The temples are split into three groups: the western group, the eastern group and the southern group. Of these, the western group is perhaps the most notable.

Situated 5kms from the town, Khajuraho Airport is the main gateway to this small but popular tourist destination. The airport serves domestic flights only, maintaining connections with Delhi, Varanasi and Kathmandu. Alternatively, it’s possible to fly to Jhani and then make a 6-hour rail journey or a 5-hour road journey to Khajuraho; the latter route is not recommended, however, as the road is notoriously bad between the two destinations. Flights to and from Khajuraho Airport are served by Indian Airlines and Jet Airways; each airline providing a single daily flight along each route operated. Both Jhansi and Khajuraho airports are small single-terminal facilities offering a limited selection of services and amenities.
