Jaisalmer is perched on a yellowish sandstone ridge in the enchanting desert-swept province of Rajasthan. Jain temple ruins and museums abound in the "Golden City". From palatial to budget, your accommodation needs are met by HotelTravel.com.

Jaisalmer, also called 'The Golden City' is located in the Indian state of Rajasthan in the heart of the Thar Desert. It received its name from the beautiful 19th century structures that were built out of exquisitely carved golden-yellow sandstone, many of which are in perfect condition today. Jaisalmer is also home to beautiful intricately designed Jain Temples, historic monuments and an abundance of interesting attractions.

A trip to Rajasthan’s oldest living fortified city of Jaisalmer is like taking a step back in time to the days of the Arabian knights. The first thing any visitor to the ‘Golden City’ will notice is the impressive yellow fortress woven into the top of the hill that dominates the centre of Jaisalmer. The Golden Fort, as it’s known due to the yellow sandstone used to build the fortress, still has a quarter of the city’s population living in it and is by far the highlight of a visit to this city. Within the fort are some of Jaisalmer’s most important historic and religious sites, as well as a living tapestry of what life could have looked like a thousand years ago when the city was a major stopover along the classic Asian caravan routes.
You won’t find any modern amusement parks, video arcades or shopping malls in Jaisalmer. In fact, there are virtually no entertainment venues in this city that would appeal to the average modern child. There are, however, vast sand dunes, camel rides and ancient fortresses to spark the imagination of most kids. If children are prepared for this kind of adventure, it will give them memories to last a lifetime.

Camel Festival: beginning with a colourful procession of camels walking through Junagarh Fort, this fascinating festival is all about the camel. From the best-decorated camel to the fastest camel, there are some really interesting events backed up by cultural performances from the humans.
Jaisalmer is veritable treasure chest of impressive historical monuments and structures. At the centre of it all is the imposing Jaisalmer Fort towering above the city with a life all its own. Within the fort, there are a dozen highlights; once you’ve explored all the tiny backstreets and bazaars, head out of town a ways and check out some of the other attractions in the immediate region, such as Amar Sagar lake and a handful of Jain temple ruins.

There is no airport near Jaisalmer, so international visitors will have to fly into Jodhpur’s airport, about 300kms away. Jodhpur is well connected to the rest of India and many other European, Middle Eastern and Asian cities through direct and connecting flights. Indian Airways and Jet Airways provide most of the travel routes around the country and to a few international destinations.
