Goa has a long history of Christian occupation, with the first Christian rulers having been succeeded by Muslims in 1312. One hundred years of Arab rule saw Goa become a significant trading port used for the transportation of Arabian horses to nearby Hampi.
This small village at the foot of Mount Alto is the centre of life in North Goa. With its nice mixture of residential and commercial establishments, the main attraction here is its Friday market. During this popular weekly event, locals come from all over the city to buy and sell a wide variety of items. From food and local liquor to jewellery and textiles, the market adds a nice dimension to a visit to this quaint little town.
Reis Magos Church Feast Day: dedicated to Gasper, Melchior and Baltazar, this particular church has one of the more interesting Feast Days, and is worth checking out if you want a classic Christian religious celebration.
Located in Panjim, the real beauty of this church emerges after dark, when the entire structure is lit up with electric lights that turn the church into a surreal glowing spectre. It is said that this church's bell is the second largest in the world.
In addition to flying, travellers who are already in India can get to Goa by ferry, train and coach. There is a boat service which runs from Mumbai to Panji, taking about eight hours. It's also possible to travel by boat from beach to beach with smaller private operators. The train journey to Goa is certainly an adventure, but can be memorable and tolerable if you have plenty of time and patience. Goa is connected to Mumbai along a 760kms coastal route, which is a scenic but time-consuming trip. The main train stations in Goa can be found at Pernem, Karmali, Thivim, Margao and Vasco da Gama.
