The Elgin Hotel is a well-preserved Victorian mansion dating to 1885 and retains all the ambience of its former owner’s princely lifestyle and taste. Once the Maharaja of Cooch Bihar’s home away from home in Darjeeling, it was turned into a hotel years later. The hotel is snug and cosy and boasts period Burma teak furniture, oak floor boards and panelling, crackling fireplaces, candlelit tables and strains of music from the grand piano, projecting palpable ‘old world charm'.
