Airports
 

The nearest airport to Alleppey is at Cochin, 40 miles to the north. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Thiruvananthapuram Airport, located 90 miles away. Cochin International Airport services flights to a limited number of international destinations mainly in the Middle East and Sri Lanka. It also operates flights to most of the major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore, where connecting flights are available to destinations all around the globe.

The airport at Cochin features two terminals, one for international flights and the other for domestic flights. Each terminal contains all the facilities a traveller will need upon arrival, including banking and currency exchange bureaux, restaurants, shops, information booths and medical centres. A well-equipped duty-free shop is located in the international terminal’s Departures area.

There are a number of transportation options for travellers upon arrival at Cochin International Airport. The terminal is located right next to the central railway line running from Delhi to Kanyakumari, providing an easy access point for train travel. Also nearby are the Angamaly and Alwaye railway stations. The airport is situated very near to three of Kerala’s main national motorways, the NH47, NH17 and NH49.

Counters for prepaid taxis can be found in the Arrivals area of both terminals, where travellers can hire a taxi to take them to their destination in Alleppey. Car rental booths for major companies are located in the Arrivals area of both terminals, and the airport has parking accommodation for over 1,100 vehicles.

Public Transport
 

The public transportation system in Kerala consists of government and private buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws. Alleppey has excellent bus and rail connections to other major Indian cities, with a road network that is among the best in the country. The train provides a pleasant way to travel as it passes through some very scenic countryside in Kerala.

Alleppey is also connected to other towns in Kerala by water ferries that operate daily routes throughout the region. For shorter trips, water-taxis provide a fun way to get around. State Water Department Ferries operate the bulk of the business, with the Alleppey to Kottayam route being a popular way to cover Kerala. Ferries leave from the tourist boat jetty which can be found near the bus station. There are also a number of special ferries which service smaller destinations in the region. The District Tourism Promotion Council is an excellent source of information for transport options in Alleppey.

For travelling around Alleppey itself, a taxi or motorised rickshaw is the best way to go. There are a number of different taxi options to consider, including those with private chauffeurs. Tourist taxis and yellow-top taxis are most prevalent and an easy way to move around the city and to destinations just outside of town. Visitors can also hire private taxis in a variety of forms if they want a driver for the day. There’s a thriving taxi industry in Alleppey, so it won’t be hard to find whatever kind of transport you require.
