Reykjavik's moderate climate sees cool temperatures throughout the year. Average temperatures during the summer are just above 10oC, with temperatures in January approaching freezing. Snow may fall in the city, though it rarely accumulates in the city itself. Accumulation is more common north of the city where glaciers spread across higher elevations.
The unique mountainous countryside around Reykjavik hosts a myriad of activities that are only found in cities like this. Snowmobiles turn glaciers into playgrounds on the Snaefellsnes peninsula, while horses are a popular mode of transport through the more rugged terrain of Raudholar volcano or the region's lava fields. For a tamer outdoor experience, consider plunging into one of the geothermal pools around town, a breeding ground for small talk and friendship.
This imposing church, finished in 1974, is the most impressive structure in Reykjavik. Even from a considerable distance, it is possible to see the church's tower which stands at a height of some 76 metres. Climbing the tower affords spectacular panoramic views of the city.
Reykjavik is served by the Keflavik International Airport, situated on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Iceland Air is the primary carrier here, operating service to several European cities as well as to destinations across North America's eastern seaboard. British Airways also operates a number of flights to and from Keflavik International.
Medical infrastructure in the city is comprehensive, and the main health hazard confronting tourists is overexposure to the elements. When travelling to higher elevations, be sure to pack warm clothing and appropriate equipment. Citizens of the EU are entitled to emergency health care and need only to show their European Health Insurance Card. Regardless of whether you are an EU national or not, travel insurance is strongly recommended.
