Top Things to See

Many of Reykjavik’s historic buildings date to the 1800s century, though visitors will find a few older structures such as the church on Vioey Island and the Lutheran Cathedral. The city's most popular tourist attractions are the Perlan observation tower (complete with revolving restaurant) and the Hallgrim's Church with its high tower. Beyond these sites, be sure to visit Mt Esja as well as Austurvollur plaza, headquarters of the world's oldest functioning parliament.

Althingishus
This 19th-century Parliament House is found at the centre of the old city on the Austurvolur plaza. Parliament House is also recognised as one of Iceland's oldest stone buildings. In the plaza is a statue of the nationalist leader (Jon Sigurdsson) who led the Icelandic march toward independence in the 1800s.

Hallgrímskirkja (Hallgrims Church)
This imposing church, finished in 1974, is the most impressive structure in Reykjavik. Even from a considerable distance, it is possible to see the church's tower which stands at a height of some 76 metres. Climbing the tower affords spectacular panoramic views of the city.

Lutheran Cathedral
This cathedral was constructed over sacred ground that has hosted a place of worship in some form since the early 1200s. The diminutive church that stands here today dates to the late 1700s, making it one of the older structures standing in Reykjavik. The hand-carved baptistery was created for the church by Bertel Thorvaldsen in the 1800s. The church is tied up in many of Iceland's nationalist movements, with the national anthem (a hymn) first sung here and the nation's independence first blessed here.

Mt Esja
Mt Esja is the highest mountain in the region, and as such it provides the best vantage point over Reykjavik. The product of volcanic eruptions, Esja's summit stands just shy of 915 metres in elevation. The mountain enjoys easy access from Reykjavik, and the climb ranges from easy to mildly strenuous, with side trails connecting to neighbouring summits.

Perlan
Crowning Oskjuhlid Hill, the Perlan (or 'Pearl') was constructed in the early 1990s. The entire facility is a tribute to the nation's geothermal assets. Several themed exhibits are found here (both inside and out), including geyser-like fountains, enormous tanks of steaming mineral water, observation decks and occasional concerts. Many visitors come specifically to dine in the revolving restaurant under a glass dome above the water tanks. The views available to diners here are unparalleled.

Vioey Island
This natural island is located a mere five minutes by boat from Reykjavik. Visitors come for natural attractions including a series of caves and nesting grounds for migratory birds. In the past, the island was home to a few inhabitants, though now it is strictly a tourist attraction. Remnants of the former habitation include an 18th-century church and a stone building from the same era. There is also a free-standing sculpture by Richard Serra on the island.
