Hungary Overview

Hungary is a country of diverse places to visit in the middle of Europe. There are caves to explore, sandy beaches to sunbathe on (despite the fact that it is a landlocked country) and mountains to climb. Hungary's many excellent hotels and great restaurants offering local and international cuisine await travellers venturing forth to visit the former communist country. Big draws are the famous Budapest Spring Festival in March and the Formula 1 race that takes place every August.

If you are seeking a holiday that's totally eastern European, then look no further than Hungary. You get all the luxury of western Europe with a Magyar twist- and at half the cost of many other European destinations. Exotic and appealing, Hungary is every bit as interesting as the folk songs that it is famous for. Surrounded by the Slav countries of Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Slovenia, the Hungarians have a rich and proud history, with their very own unique culture and heritage stretching back to Roman times.

Budapest is the capital of Hungary, located on the Danube River, and is divided into three distinct districts: Buda, Castle Hill, and Pest. Most tourists flock to the historic Castle Hill area, with its castles, landmarks and attractions such as the Vienna Gate, Royal Palace, and Mary Magdalene Tower. Finding your accommodation in Budapest is easy, but one must book early because the city, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, draws up to 20 million visitors a year.

Throughout Hungary, smaller cities such as Eger, Pecs, Szentendre and Sopron offer rich histories and splendid architecture. Be sure to visit the Puszta prairie, which many consider Hungary's defining landscape. Don't forget about resorts spread around the country at such places as Lake Balaton, which is the continent's largest freshwater lake, or along the dozens of rivers that flow through the hills and mountains of this beautiful land. Because Hungary is at once old and new, modern and classical, westernized yet still very much eastern, it is a fascinating place to spend a holiday.
