Airports

The enormous Hong Kong International Airport, located just to the north of Lantau island, handles all flights in and out of Kowloon. Its size is considered by some to be a negative factor, in that passengers must make long treks to get to their gate without the help of baggage carts. However, this modern airport has the full range of other facilities for visitors. Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s principal carrier, is known for its excellent service and runs regular flights to cities all over the world. Around 40 carriers from around the world also have frequent flights to Kowloon.

While there are several transport options from the airport to Kowloon, the best choice is the incredible Airport Express light rail which whisks passengers from the terminal to Kowloon in just 19 minutes. This economical and convenient form of transport departs every 12 minutes daily between 05:50 and 01:15. Airport Express also operates a free shuttle bus which runs between the Kowloon terminal and most major hotels. Airbus is another good option, covering nearly every hotel in Kowloon, but the trip takes about one hour. You can also take one of several public buses that service the airport, but while these are the cheapest option they take much longer than the express buses. Taxis are naturally available, but they are rather expensive. For the ultimate in convenience and luxury, DCH Limo Service will take you right to your destination for a hefty fee.

Public Transport

Due to Kowloon’s somewhat isolated location, the vast majority of travellers arrive by air. However, if you are already in China you can take the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, which offers a direct 26-hour train link between the two cities. This train terminates at the East Tsim Sha Tsui Station, which links up with the subway and local bus routes. Kowloon is also accessible by boat as over 30 international cruise ships call at Kowloon’s Ocean Terminal. Long-distance coach travel is not a very convenient means of getting to Kowloon, but the local double-decker buses cover most of Hong Kong from 06:00 to midnight every day.

The best way to get around Kowloon and Hong Kong is via the Mass Transit Railway (MRT), which has four lines servicing the main parts of the territory. The subway is easy and safe, and the ticket sellers usually speak English. Metered taxis in Kowloon are red and have an illuminated sign on the roof if they are available for hire. However, most drivers can’t speak English so you may want to have your destination written in Chinese for you by someone at your hotel. Maxicabs and minicabs are another taxi-like option. These green-roofed vans are a quick way to get around town and will stop at designated spots or whenever you ask to get off. Driving a car around Kowloon is not the best choice for transportation. Traffic, parking and driving conditions are all considered big hassles.
