Airports

Zakynthos International Airport is the only airport on the island and hence it’s the primary international gateway. The airport serves flights to and from mainland Greece, as well as flights to a number of major European cities. Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook Airlines, Monarch Airlines and First Choice Airways collectively provide flights from a large number of UK cities although many services are seasonal charter flights.

The airport is fairly basic, offering a simple selection of facilities. ATMs and bureaux de change are available, plus a single snack bar and a duty-free shop. Getting from the airport to the capital and other parts of the island is possible by public bus, taxi and hotel courtesy shuttle.

Public Transport

The island can be reached by boat in about one hour, 30 minutes from the city of Kyllini on mainland Greece. Services operate up to seven times a day from Monday to Saturday and three times a day on Sunday. During the summer season, there’s also a car ferry service between Agios Nikolaos and the island of Kefalonia.

Zakynthos has its own public bus network, but it’s not renowned for its reliability or the frequency of its services. Since taxis are relatively cheap, they can be a good way of getting around but visitors should watch for unscrupulous drivers. A hire car is perhaps the most convenient option for visitors planning extensive travel during their holiday. Alternatively, young adventurous types might prefer to rent a motorcycle.
