Thessaloniki, in the Central Macedonia region of Greece, is the country's second biggest city after Athens and one of its most popular tourist destinations. Though it's a city by the sea, it doesn't typically attract beach holidaymakers. Instead the majority of its visitors come for the local culture, the historical buildings and the fantastic cuisine.
Greece's second largest city is better known for its historical and cultural attractions than for being a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts or an ideal children's holiday destination. The city does not disappoint in either of these areas, however, with attractions such as Waterland, Magic Park and the Thessaloniki Zoo pulling family visitors in large number. The beaches, meanwhile, are great for water sports or relaxation.
Although now offering only ruined remains, the site of Galerius's Palace was once occupied by the royal home of the Roman emperor Galerius Maximianus. The palace was a two-storey building with a large courtyard and was most likely lavishly decorated inside. Of the ruins left standing, the Octagon is one of the best-preserved parts.
Thessaloniki International Airport is the main international gateway to the city and is situated 16 kilometres from the city centre. It's a small airport that serves both international and domestic flights of the scheduled and charter varieties.
There's little in the way of danger in Thessaloniki and few visitors experience anything untoward during their holiday. Pickpockets can be an issue so it pays to be cautious with your belongings around popular tourist attractions. Some of the churches attract gypsy children who may attempt to distract your attention while accomplices relieve you of your wallet and valuables, so keep your distance from them.
