On Santorini, it is very difficult to stop discovering great sights and places to visit, with its astonishing views, quaint villages, serene monasteries and spectacular coastline.

Akrotiri
Located on the southwest part of Santorini, Akrotiri is a beautiful village with magnificent views of the caldera. However, the village is most famous for its archaeological sites, which are considered among the most important in Greece. An entire Minoan town was buried under volcanic ash here and has only been uncovered in recent times. While many of the most valuable treasures have been removed to the Athens Archaeological Museum, the site remains a wonderful place to explore.

Imerovigli
One of the most spectacular scenic spots on Santorini is Imerovigli, situated not far from Thira. The highlight here is the stunning fortress of Skaros, the former Venetian capital if the island, the views from which are magnificent, even for Santorini. Just near here is the site of Rocca fortress, which was destroyed along with its village in the 1956 earthquake.

Kamari
One of the most popular beach resorts on Santorini is Kamari, a black pebble beach, lined with a promenade and hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Kamari is known as the most family-friendly spot on the island and therefore lacks the lively clubbing scene of other beach resorts.

Monastery of Profitis Ilias
Known for its stunning views and enthralling museum, the 18th century Monastery of Profitis Ilias is a popular destination with tourists. Located atop one of the highest peaks on the island, the monastery is dedicated to Elijah and the museum has some valuable ancient documents and manuscripts. The old rooms and courtyards are enchanting and all the while you are rewarded with some of the best vistas on the island.

Oia Town
A more chic and upmarket version of Thira, Oia is located on the northwest tip of the island and is regarded as the best spot to observe sunsets over the cadera. In keeping with its trendy reputation, Oia's streets have plenty of modern art galleries, quality handicrafts and great boutiques. The harbour below played an important role in Mediterranean naval history, documented by the town's acclaimed Naval Museum. Those brave enough to scale down steep staircases have a choice of two beaches, Amoudi and Armeni.

Palia Kameni and Nia Kameni
These two pimples poking up out of the centre of the caldera are nothing much more than volcanic ash, mud and sulphur. Still, thousands of tourists visit these islands for one of the closest experiences to a live volcano you can get. The water around the two islets is quite warm, if not hot.

Perissa
Offering a contrast to nearby Kamari is Perissa, this livelier beach resort is popular with couples. The beach here is quite nice and the village is picturesquely located at the base of a towering mountain. Perissa tends to attract budget tourists and backpackers, and there is an enormous campground to accommodate them. Hotels, condominiums and guesthouses are also in ample supply. Families can travel to the nearby Santorini Water Park for some safe fun for the kids.

Pyrgos
The most popular of Santorini's mountain villages, Pyrgos is postcard perfect in its tranquil setting, high on the side of Mount Profitis Ilias. Many tourists stop here on their way to the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, and with good reason – the atmosphere here is authentic and a welcome relief to the touristy cities and towns along the coast. Pyrgos is also one of the best places to pick up locally produced goods and souvenirs.

Santorini Volcano Caldera
With views to die for, Santorini Volcano Caldera dominates all life on Santorini. The awe never lessens, no matter how many times you view the volcano, even with so many vantage points offering stunning views. The best views are from Thira, Oia, Skaros and Akrotiri, while for a different perspective, try viewing the aforementioned towns from a yacht out on the caldera's surface, where soaring 300-metre high cliffs are dotted with white buildings with blue windows as well as blue domed churches. For an up-close and personal view of the volcano, take a mini submarine excursion deep beneath the waters of the caldera.

Thira Town
The capital of Santorini, Thira is an ancient town and the focal point of the island's tourism, commerce and society. Here you'll find several world-class museums, a fantastic archaeological site, great shopping and dining opportunities, and some of the island's best hotels. At the base of the 300 metre high cliff is Thira port, where cruise ships and ferries unload their passengers. Getting to the town from the port is a hair-raising experience for those who opt for the mule ride, while a cable car whisks those who are not so keen on adventure up the cliff face. Naturally, Thira has some of the best views of the caldera on Santorini.

Thirassia
The second largest island in the Santorini group is Thirassia, and many tourists prefer the less developed, more authentic feel of its towns and villages. Thirassia was once part of Thira, even after Strongili was shattered, and it did not become separated until 236 BC. The views from Thirassia are equally as good as those on Thira and perhaps even more so, as they offer the chance to view the strings of white houses perched atop the cliffs. The island is noted for its cherry tomatoes and some local cuisine specialised in their use as ingredients.

Top Things to Do

Stare in awe at the Santorini Volcano caldera from Thira Town and enjoy the stunning views or explore the underwater world of the volcano in a mini submarine. Other ways to view the caldera include sailing on a yacht and island-hopping within the caldera.

Witness an unforgettable sunset from Oia Town after an afternoon of wine tasting at the award-wining Boutari winery.

Dive and explore Minoan-era historic sites or take a mule ride from Thira Port up the cliff face to Thira Town.

Sunbathe on a black volcanic sand beach at Perissa, then dance on the beach to great music at the Santorini Jazz Festival.
