Ippokratis Airport is the island’s main airport and is a very busy single-terminal facility serving the numerous daily charter flights which arrive from all over Europe. It serves over 30 different airlines with the main flights arriving from and departing to the UK. Facilities include banks, ATMs, eateries, shops, bars and lounges. There are airport information desks located throughout should you need any assistance.

The airport is located 26 kilometres from Kos Town but there are a number of ground transfer options available. Depending on where you are staying, you may find that you are offered a free shuttle service to and from the airport. However, if you are not you will find a bus station outside Arrivals which offers routes to Kos Town and the main resorts and you will also find a taxi stand here. Fares are supposedly fixed, but can be negotiated if you feel the price is too high.

Public transport options in Kos consist of a bus service, two tourist trains, taxis, and car and bicycle rental. The roads which connect the main resorts are in relatively good condition, making driving easier, but you must take care on the mountainous roads and pay particular attention to what you are doing as the Greeks are notorious for being erratic drivers.

The two tourist trains offer one route around the town and one route to the Asklepieion; both trains are very slow and fairly expensive. However, there are day passes available. They are mainly used by tourists. For a cheaper option, there are a number of local buses offering services around the island. Daily and weekly passes are available which offer unlimited rides for a set price.

Taxis are also on hand to take you on short trips around the island and although fares are generally fixed, you need to make sure before you get in. They can either be flagged down on the street or booked in advance. The flat terrain around coast is ideal for cycling and hiring a bike is an excellent way to see the sights and get your bearings. Hiring a car is also a good idea although booking online and in advance is highly recommended as you are sure to find the best prices and find the car of your choice.
