Top Things to See

There is something for everyone in Kos, regardless of how old you are, what sex you are or what your interests are. Highlights include a ride on the island’s tourist train, a trip up into the mountains to explore the local villages and of course, some of the major resorts. The heart of Kos is lively, fun and really comes alive at night. For something a bit quieter, head out to the smaller beaches and also further inland where you will see the ‘real’ Kos.

Hippocrates Plane Tree
Situated very close to the ancient Agora, the Plane Tree is very famous and stands in the middle of Plateia Platanou, next to the Castle of the Knights. It is regarded as not only being the oldest, but also the largest tree of its kind in Europe, boasting a 15-metre diameter. Legend has it that this tree provided shade for Hippocrates and his pupils over 2,400 years ago.

Kefalos Bay and Kamari
Kefalos Bay can be reached by following the main road away from Kos Town. It is 12 kilometres of golden sand beaches and a number of attractions such as water sports facilities, restaurants, bars and shops. There are actually seven beaches along this stretch, with Paradise and Banana being among the best. Located directly below Kefalos, the resort of Kamari is the busiest on the island and the place to head for a good night out. It is brimming with bars, restaurants, hotels and also houses a harbour where you can take a boat trip to neighbouring islands.

Mastihari Village/Resort
If you want to get away from it all for a while, this resort is the place to head. It lies 30 kilometres from Kos Town and is a favourite place for the locals to visit with its sandy beaches, local restaurants and traditional Greek ambience. There are daily ferries from here which head to Pothia and Pserimos.

Mountain Villages
If you head inland, you will find a number of beautiful mountain villages. One of the nicest is the village of Zipari. This village is home to a famous taverna where you will be able to enjoy a traditional Greek lunch. Located very close to this village is the scenic hamlet called Agios Dimitrios, where you can enjoy total peace and quiet as well as some stunning views across the bay. Other villages worthy of note include Zia, Lagoudi, Amaniou, and Pyli.

Tourist Train
This is a popular feature with all tourists who arrive in Kos. Guided tours are available on this train, which takes you around the island. The tour starts from the Municipality Building and takes visitors to many of the island’s main sights as well as past some impressive viewpoints. The journey lasts for approximately 20 minutes.
