Corfu is ideal for children and those who enjoy getting active. The weather for the most part is excellent and the island boasts diverse landscapes. You can enjoy jet-skiing, parasailing, or snorkelling, or perhaps go hiking and biking in the hills. In addition, there is an established water park on the island which is perfect for kids and hot days.

Aqualand Water Park
Located in the centre of the island, Aqualand makes a great day out for the entire family, as well as for couples and singles. It is one of Europe’s largest water parks with loads of slides and games available, including giant kamikaze-type slides, multi-slides, the feared Black Hole, and several leisure pools. There is also a lazy river ride and a large Jacuzzi, while shops and restaurants are also onsite.

Beach Water Sports
With its myriad beaches and beautiful warm weather, Corfu has every type of water sport available. The main resort of Benitses to the south of Corfu Town has the pick of the water sports action, with jet-skis, parasailing and banana boats galore. You can also charter boats and go on a cruise, or perhaps snorkel off one of the quieter and more remote Western beaches. Kids will find the banana boats and pedalos the most fun.

Golf
There are several top quality golf courses on Corfu and the Corfu Golf Club, in Ropa Valley, offers a clean break from the beaches and crowds. Located near the village of Pelekas, up in the hills of the centre of Corfu, it is well landscaped and one of the country’s most stunning courses, with nice greens, fairways and views, and a good clubhouse.

Paleokastritsa is well known for its snorkelling.

Walking, Biking and Horseback Riding
Corfu is not just about beaches and sunbathing; it also has a mountainous terrain with some excellent walking and horse trails. There are trails from all established resorts, although you may want to scooter or drive out to the hills in the north or centre and take on the established hiking and horseback trails. Mount Pantokrator has the best hiking.
With its long and rich history, options for enjoying culture on this popular holiday island are very good and can mainly be enjoyed in the impressive capital, Corfu Town. A couple of excellent museums reside here as well as the revered Achilleion villa, while farther afield is Roda village and daytrips to neighbouring Ionian Islands.

Achilleion
Achilleion is a villa-cum-palace that dates from the late 1900s and was built by Empress Elizabeth of Austria as a memorial to her dead son. The Neoclassical structure is simply beautiful, with stunning décor and gardens from which you have fine views from the terrace. Inside are carved emblems and Achilles statues, and there is also a museum here.

Archaeological Museum
The small Archaeological Museum in Corfu Town is a must-see for those into history. It is located on the waterfront on Demokratias and teaches all about the island’s history through its fascinating range of artefacts. Sculptures and statues are among the items on display, along with the pediment of the Temple of Artemis, the museum’s centrepiece. The 575 BC stone lion is even older.

Roda Village
Roda is a growing beach resort in the north of Corfu which has blossomed from a fishing village. Fortunately, it retains plenty of its original character, in contrast to the manic southern resorts. The waterfront area has plenty of shops and restaurants, and boat trips from here are very popular. The fishing harbour is to the east of the beach.
All types of food can be had on Corfu and the good thing is that prices here are very reasonable. The main resorts of Benitses and Kavos have an array of international restaurants and themed European pubs catering to the tourist masses, as well as local Greek cafés. Kanoni and Roda village have more sophisticated dining while Corfu Town has the best selection, from terraced cafés to fine dining.

Many hotels and resorts offer all types of cuisine and serve reasonably good Greek food. Moussaka is Greece’s main dish and a must-try; it’s heavy on the minced beef, bechamel-style sauce and eggplant. Lamb fricassee stew is also worth a go while an array of seafood dishes are on most menus, like fried codfish (bakaliaro) and grilled squid (calamari).

Tourist resorts offer typical tourist kitsch, minimarts and hypermarkets, yet the best shopping is without doubt in Corfu Town. Handicrafts are quite good here, but the famous mandolato nougat, kumquat liqueur, and tagari woollen bags are the specialities best associated with Corfu Town.
The delicious local honey in Kythira is also popular with tourists, while Paxi is the main source of Corfu’s famed olive oil and leather goods are all around. To see and buy authentic items, take a look around some of Corfu’s more remote villages and perhaps pick up some embroidered lace and linen.
