Famously known for its Nazi war crime trials and gingerbread (lebkuchen), Nuremberg is a city that was painstakingly rebuilt after severe WWII bombings virtually flattened it to the ground. Now boasting much of its former medieval glory, the one-time hub of the Third Reich attracts visitors from around the globe who come to experience its architectural masterpieces, fantastic museums, rich history and culinary delights.
This museum was established in the Fembo House after WWII to commemorate the city's former architectural magnificence. WWII bombings reduced the city to ruins, destroying some of the city's most attractive medieval buildings. Fembo House dates from 1420 and was one of the few buildings of its period to have escaped Allied bombing. Its 30-plus panelled rooms which are open to the public house a rich collection of antique furniture and valuable artworks. Visitors can enjoy a model replica of pre-war Nuremberg which is enhanced by light and sound. Phone: +49 11 231 2595.
New Year’s Day: a public holiday, visitors are likely to find Nuremberg’s streets largely deserted as residents recover from the festivities of the night before. Transport options are also limited on this day and most businesses will be shut.
As the focus point of Main Market (Hauptmarkt), this lovely church overshadows the city's heart of activity. Initiated by Emperor Karl IV in the early 1800s, the church is a fine example of the master builder's work, Peter Parler. As one of Franconia's oldest churches and Nuremberg's primary Catholic church, it is a must-visit. Each year, the church elects a 'Christ Child' who is then responsible for officially opening the Christmas Market (Christkindlsmarkt) held in the square. Guided tours of the church are available. Once in the city, the U-Bahn is easy to use and provides access to most parts of the city with 40 stations. The system includes both underground and overground services and tickets can be bought at all stations. As the newest U-Baht network in Germany, you can expect trains to be clean and modern and services to be punctual.
Visitors from other EU countries do not require a visa to enter Germany however some non-EU visitors do. It is best to consult your nearest Germany embassy before your departure for up-to-date visa information.
